Sicily, in addition to being the southernmost exceptional golf region of Italy, is in first place in terms of surface area and is the largest island in the Mediterranean. It is also called ‘Island of the sun’ because it is characterized by an intensely blue and luminous sky and by the abundance of citrus fruits with warm golden hues.
The island represents the ideal mix of history, art, nature and the sea. Due to its triangular shape, in ancient times it was given the name of Trinacria – Land of the three promontories.
GOLF IN SICILY
Mount Etna (3,326 meters), a very active volcano that dominates the north-eastern part of the island, is the Sicilian point with the highest altitude. Sicily is also surrounded by archipelagos and islands: the Aeolian Islands (with the two active volcanoes of Stromboli and Vulcano), the Egadi, the Pelagie, Pantelleria and Ustica.
Palermo is the regional capital. Among the other main cities, Catania is an important commercial center, Agrigento and Syracuse are famous for the majestic remains of the ancient Greek civilization and Messina is a very modern city.
Sicily is a place of wonderful beaches including those of Mondello, Taormina, Giardini Naxos, Cefalù, Capo d’Orlando and San Vito lo Capo.
A land rich in numerous nature reserves, Sicily, as well as for the warmth and hospitality of its population, is known throughout the world for the flavors of its cuisine, the result of the genuineness of local agriculture and fishing products. Its grapes and wines, of great value, are sought after everywhere.
